What to Look For:
The authors of The Everything Guide to Bottled Water offered key insights about bottled water:
1. Mineral Content and Taste: The mineral levels in bottled water significantly influence its taste.
The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
measure the mineral content—a higher TDS results in a more complex and robust flavor.
For example, 'Berg' water, sourced from an ice glacier, has a very low TDS of five, making it smooth and slightly fruity. In contrast, 'Vichy Catalan' has a very high TDS, over 3,050, and is richer in electrolytes than sports drinks like Gatorade.
2. Choosing the Best Water: There's no universally "best" water; the ideal choice depends on personal preference and the need for minerals. However, it's important to distinguish between purified and spring/mineral water. Purified water is essentially processed tap water stripped of minerals, while spring or mineral water retains its natural mineral content.
3. Purchasing Bottled Water: It's crucial to read the labels when buying bottled water. Look for terms like spring water, well water, or glacier water, which indicate natural sourcing. Purified water, conversely, is akin to tap water and may not offer the benefits of naturally occurring minerals.
This recommendation includes the author's (mine) preference for Fiji water due to its smooth, almost fruity taste.
4. Ideal Drinking Temperature: The optimal temperature for drinking water is around 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
Chilling water excessively can diminish its aroma, much like what happens with wine.
The American habit of drinking beverages very cold can detract from the full sensory experience of the water.
New Paragraph
As a veteran, the principles of discipline and responsibility have been deeply ingrained in me. These values are not just confined to the field but extend to all aspects of life, including our environmental responsibilities. The more I learn, the more I understand and advocate for making eco-friendly choices, understanding that every decision we make impacts our planet.
This is why choosing brands that prioritize sustainability is important because it's not just about the products we buy but about the afterlife of these products and the importance of recycling. It's a simple yet powerful way to reduce our environmental footprint, turn waste into resources, and foster a more sustainable future.
Hydration is often overlooked, yet it is necessary for our well-being. Proper hydration is essential to maintain energy levels, ensure our bodies function efficiently during exercise, and fuel and replenish our bodies. Post-exercise, hydration aids in recovery, helping to repair muscles and replenish lost fluids. This is particularly crucial as we age because our bodies demand more care and attention.
My experiences as a mother, a veteran, and a coach have taught me the power of informed decision-making. I understand that each choice, no matter how small it seems, can have a profound impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.
Be aware, ask questions, and seek information. Knowledge is power when we act on what we know. From selecting the right type of water - understanding its source, content, and environmental impact - to navigating life-altering decisions post-military service.
This journey is about empowerment through education and action. As we empower ourselves with knowledge, we become better equipped to make choices that benefit us and contribute positively to our communities and the environment.
As we move forward in our journeys, we must make choices that show commitment to ourselves, our families, and our planet. Our choices reflect how we treat ourselves and our respect for our bodies and the environment.
So, let's let our choices empower us and uphold the values we cherish.
Be Well. Stay hydrated, stay informed, and continue stepping into your best self.
